Chris did some asking around at work, and sent me 2 destinations about 2 hours south of Odessa: Balmorea and the Davis Mountains. You go through Balmorea to get to the Davis Mountains. It's a nice swimming hole that I'm sure we will go to several times this summer.
The Davis Mountains has lots of hiking trails, and we took advantage of a few. They aren't my luscious green Smokey's, but they are just as beautiful.
They also had tons of mountain bike trails. You know, just more enticement for our friends to come visit us. You know who are. 😉
There was a cute place to stay called the Indian Lodge. The Black Bear Restaurant there had very good burgers and potato soup.
I think next time we go, we will stay a few days.
After exploring the mountains and eating lunch, we went to the McDonald Observatory.
There we went on a guided tour. He showed us live images of the sun from images that they took with the telescopes they have on site.
I want to go back and do a star show tour. It would definitely be amazing to see the stars up that close!
